CHINESE GRAPEFRUIT (POMELO)
Description:
The Chinese Grapefruit has the distinction of being the largest citrus fruit. The tree grows fairly tall, for a citrus tree, ranging from 15 to 30 feet in height. The leaves are leathery and dark green and the tree produce large, fragrant white flowers. The fruit is round to slightly pear shaped. It may grow to a diameter of 12 inches or more and attain a weight of 20 to 22 pounds. The easy-to-peel greenish yellow rind is thick and contains a dense layer of spongy pith. The flesh, divided into segments, varies from a pale straw color to pink to deep rose. Some contain an excess of seeds and others are nearly seedless. The flavor is like that of a mild, less bitter grapefruit. It is generally quite sweet and can be enjoyed in any way the grapefruit can.
